The expression of toxic peptides in the neurons of animals compromises their ability to send signals to control the contraction of the worm pharynx. These effects on pumping can be measured in terms of electrical signals. Thus, the Mendenhall lab utilizes a device manufactured by Nemametrix, Inc (Eugene, OR) to measure differences in neuronally generated electrical signals caused by the expression of neurodegenerative disease associated toxic peptides in neurons.
